I'll add one more:
Unless you are extraordinaryly talented as an interviewee, it is best if your first on-campus interview is at a place you don't want very badly. It can be the dress rehearsal. I wish I had known that. My first campus interview was for a job I really wanted in a location I really wanted, and one of my references was a personal friend of the chair. I can't believe how I tripped over myself on that one.

I wish I had known that when you did not get the job, no one will understand how upset you are except someone in the same position. And that you can stay upset for months.
