Are you aware of the top ten universities in UAE that are equally comparable to universities in Europe/US. Are American University of Sharjah and HCT comparable to a 4 year teaching university in the US or to a community college.

The number 1 university in the UAE is:

United Arab Emirates University (World University Ranking: 374)

None of the other universities in the UAE fall under the category of the world's top universities according to the Times Higher - QS World University Rankings 500+.

An oxymoronic question.

I'm just curious--why do all of the UAE threads focus on rankings? I can only assume that some pseudo-spammer from UAE thinks that we will all want to run over there and apply for jobs based on some trumped-up ranking system.

The influence of the American model?  Check a few US college Web sites and there is a good chance that one or more rankings will be mentioned.

I'm not so sure this is accurate.

There are only 2 local universities that are not just teaching colleges but have credible research ambitions: UAEU and the American  University of Sharjah. Some people would also count in the University of Sharjah, but...  let's say the administration there can be quite creative.

The rest may be attractive if you want to teach, make money, and enjoy the sun.

Some of the foreign universities like BUiD are also serious about research. But they are usually quite small and not financially secure.

The ranking obsession (and the real interest in accreditations) is motivated by a desire to demonstrate to the government and the student audience that the university is a serious international player. The belief is that anything good needs to be compared to established international/Western practice. Often it is a genuine attempt to improve and motivated towards improvement. Easy to poo-poo if you're established already but if your starting point is south of rank 374, what do you do...?

I do not work at UAEU but one should understand that it is attempting to transform itself into a research university. This has not pleased all who work there many of whom teach remedial courses and will no longer be needed. I suggest you cast a broader net for information and not depend on the above blog as a sole source. Read it and you will see why.
