I have some tests. It is past the due date, and therefore these tests are now "not available."

However I would like to re-open these tests and extend the due date. So I go into "Edit the test options." Then I get an error message:

blackboard.servlet.tags.ngui.picker.DateRangePickerTag tag restrict: the end time cannot be earlier than or equal to the start time.
For reference, the Error ID is 6f41a689-9b54-4261-a49e-bc2739b0111d.

So, is there a way to reopen these tests? I don't want to make a new copy of the test, because there are already student attempts in the closed test. Creating a new test, and allowing students to attempt it, will f*ck up the grade book.

Any suggestions?

What if you changed the end time first?  (ie, extend the time limit so that students have 3 days to complete it, or whatever will extend it past the new start time that you want to apply?)

Stupid Blackboard.

Double check and make sure that the year of the end time didn't get messed up. Like if it were set like this it wouldn't work.
start: Feb 7, 2010
end: Feb 21, 2009

Also, just try re-setting the start date to something much earlier, and then change the due date. It might just need to refresh or something.

The problem is IT WON'T LET ME IN TO CHANGE THE DATE.

I have done a lot more research on this since last night, and it is a widespread problem that has apparently been escalated and is awaiting a fix: http://discussions.blackboard.com/forums/p/48187/147141.aspx

What happens is if you don't set a specific start date when you first make the test, it confuses Blackboard. You see my "tests" aren't really tests. They're homeworks. So students are allowed to work ahead, and I don't give them start dates. I just make them available immediately. This is what has f*cked up my tests--no start date.

There is a work-around, but as explained in the link above, it is a "back-end" fix. But we aren't hosting our server, so even my IT people can't help.

Now that I know I'm f*cked, I need to find the lowest-hassle work around., which is no doubt going to involve creating copies of these tests and royally f*cking up my gradebook.

Crud.  I feel like the Blackboard people should offer to fix your gradebook.  What a pain.  (Is it possible to delete grade columns after the fact?  So if you made new ones for the new tests, you could delete the old ones after?  Or would that mess up your weighting scheme?)

How frustrating.  Farking Blackboard.

It sounds as though you're going to have to change grades manually.  I hope it's a smaller class!

I'm sorry about the problem, and the link.  Thanks for the heads up.  It seems as though Bb is extremely picky about dates -- without letting you know that!

Ugh.

I assume that you don't want students who'd already submitted work to have a second attempt? Here's one thought that might work.

Clone the tests. Go to "Selective Release" and use the gradebook column of the original test version as the condition. Hopefully it can be set for "gradebook column is less than lowest possible score", and that it distinguishes "0" from a blank column. Otherwise you may need to set up your conditions to exclude the students who've already submitted work (or to release only to the students who haven't started-- whichever group is smaller).

Yeah, your gradebook will have to be reconfigured. Create a new column in the gradebook, and make it equal to the greater of the 2 test columns. Use this column and hide the other 2. Your "final grade" column would have to be reconfigured so that it uses the correct test column.

(I've found it easier to import/export between the gradebook and Excel-- Excel doesn't seem to be as clumsy.)

Hope this helps!

I can't delete the old ones because some students have already taken the tests.

This makes sense, and I'm getting ready to do something like that. F*ckety, f*ck, f*ck, f*ck.

"I can't delete the old ones because some students have already taken the tests."

Bleck.

What you could do is bring up a listing of the old grades and PRINT it out. Then delete the old test, create the new one and then you'll have to manually type the old scores into the new gradebook column (assuming it lets you do that?).

If you're concerned about students who took the old test not being able to view their completed test, could you just disconnect the old test from the gradebook, but leave it up for the students to view?

(I'm sorry I'm not more sure on these. It's been a while since I used BB and things vary by version.)

Word of warning: you should always set both or neither checkboxes for availability. The error the OP mentioned usually occurs when you select only one of the availability checkboxes.

OP, can't you remove the tests while keeping the grades that have already been submitted?

Thanks for all of the suggestions. My IT person called the Bb people who handle our server, and a Bb person went in through the back end and fixed the dates. All is good. No f*cked up grade books.

Yep. And now I know how to avoid this problem in the future.
