So I had an on-campus for my dream job. I was second of four invited to campus, and (between you and me) I killed. But they were having trouble getting one of the subsequent candidates to campus. (Hu, poor soul, had schedule conflicts.)

Now there is no good reason for me to contact the SC. Knowing the timeline won't change the timeline. But knowing that the search won't wrap up for another two weeks might allow me to take a deep breath for the first time in a while. But that's not the SC's problem, and I don't want to seem needy.

Slap me across the face, and send me to the movies. (Avatar in 3D?)

I know how you feel, airball.  Here, let me drop you off at the movie theater.  You're going to a double feature of whatever movies are the longest.  Popcorn's on me.

Get thee away from they phone AND computer! I hear Sherlock Holmes is good too, if you are a Robert Downey Jr. fan. Or, if you really want a perspective distraction, go see Precious.

Different advice here. I just encountered a student who's (1) defending next month and (2) waiting to hear after an interview -- in the library stacks with a big pile of books researching a completely new topic for an article that won't come out of the dissertation. New research! Fascinating! Takes up far more time than you expect, always, because there are so many new things to figure out! Not only a distraction but one with eventual "cash value."

Don't even be tempted, a watched pot never boils and a candidate who the SC believes to be neurotic or pushy never gets the offer. There is the other candidate's schedule and the dean/HR's schedule to consider, so as painful as it is you must wait (perhaps even longer than you think). I understand the temptation, I'm crossing my fingers right now for an interview call for my dream job that only recently closed. Get out of the house as much as possible: hike, bike, anything to get you moving and give yourself an outlet for the energy.

Get thee to the movie theatre, Airball.
Distraction (productive or non-) is the key here.

I'm sending good thoughts your way, and I hope you get the gig!

There IS a good reason to contact the SC! Call and then you will make sure they give the job to someone else.

I e-mailed an SCC once, and that was 4 months after an interview with absolutely no contact in between.  I got an immediate response saying the position had been filled, something I had already surmised.  Thing is, this was a senior-rank, chair position.  Given the enormous lack of courtesy shown to me (and presumably everyone else), I was glad I didn't get the job.
