A bit concerned here. Bellevue College (previously known as Bellevue Community College) in Washington has had jobs open in the English department in 07, 08, 09 and now coming up in 2010. I know that there may be attrition due to retirement, or even an increase in need due to rising student population, but I don't think that explains the "revolving door" here. Anyone know anything?

My experience with Bellevue has been from a distance, gbrown, but it is, I believe, the largest of the community colleges in the Washington state system. It also offers four-year Bachelor of Arts degrees, so the number of annual job announcements in English could reflect both its enrollment growth and the addition of the BA to its degree offerings (the BA came into effect around 2005-2006, if I'm not mistaken). They have an enormous distance ed program as well, so that may factor into the relatively large number of position announcements.

Some might argue that our department suffers a certain degree of toxicity, but if it does, it mustn't be enough to send faculty running for the exits. As a former part-timer (6 years) and now full-timer (4 years) here at Bellevue, I can assure you that Bellevue's English department has one of the most stable, if not the most stable, faculties in the 2-year system. Your "revolving door" is called retirement and funding for growth. In the last five years, our department has lost three senior faculty members to retirement, another long term (15+ years) full-timer to a change in life direction, and is still poised to lose at least one more senior faculty in the not-too-distant future. With record-breaking growth to our campus, our department can barely keep up.
Who told you everyone was leaving?

And there you have it!
The word is that BCC is on its way to becoming a four-year institution, it might have already happened except for the economic downturn.

I wouldn't call that a full-throated denial, however....

Well, that killed the conversation.
Speculation beats first-hand evidence any day for pure entertainment. I'm still hoping one of Stanton's colleagues will show up to refute her account.

I don't know anything about this particular cc, but we had 2 huge retirement waves that led to a lot of new hires. Also, if Bellevue is going 4-year, then they will need more faculty.
I wish my cc was going 4 year. I suggested it back in 1994.
