AAAS is mid Feb 2010. The conference is at the convention center, the Hyatt and the Marriott. The conference hotels are the Hyatt, the Marriott and the Omni.
Marriott v. Omni? Preferences or recommendations from conference goers would be greatly appreciated.

I know people going and some are staying the Omni and some in the Marriott. The ones staying in the Marriott chose it because they are angling for a view. The ones staying in the Omni don't like the Marriott chain. So I guess you can take your pick and/or read reviews on tripadvisor etc.

I stayed at the Marriott Residence last spring, since it has full kitchens. It is farther away, but they run a free shuttle to the Convention Center. It is not as upscale as many of the Residence brand, since apparently they bought an old apartment hotel, but their pricing is considerably more reasonable also.

Watch out for the residence inns in san diego. Last meeting I went to in san diego i believe it was one of those properties - my colleague's students stayed there and found bed bugs in the bed. although this was not downtown is was out in another part of san diego.

Thanks for the responses and advice. San Diego is a frequent spot for conferences, and I thought I might draw upon the collected forum experience. I have procrastinated with hotel reservations this year, busy + budget.
Bed bugs. Quelle horreur! What was left off of that story was whether the grad students are sent back every year to the same lodging. Is there a thread on worst conference hotel experiences that you [or your grad students] attended?
There was one trip to [redacted] where at night the walls were living curtains of cockroaches. Just a homey feel altogether. Oh to be young, poor, and full of hope.

I've seen cockroaches in some pretty nice properties. Although they tend to be the ones "in decline" rather than the ones that are kept up well. I would not send a student back to a property that had bed bugs.

I was in town over the Christmas break, stayed at the Marriott. It was good, although we were a little put-off by the signs outside reading "Abuse of Immigrant Labor Here". How were we to know in advance?
