It is too late for you now, but as I said, mentioning the connection in the cover letter may give you the chance to wow them with your other amazing qualities.

As many have said - if it was Lubbock, TX or Rolla, MO - I'd mention it.  If it was Palo Alto or NYC, I don't think it would make a big difference (wouldn't hurt though).
