Hi All;  I know there was a thread about Bridgewater and Framingham about a year ago (heck, I commented in it), but they were primarily regarding the communities.  A posting has recently appeared for a position I may be interested in.  I know the location, costs, etc fairly well as I'm from Rhode Island.  However, for some reason I know next to nothing about the actual College except that it's generally regarded as an "average" state college in Massachusetts.  So, any specific info on the College would be helpful.  More specifically, I'm interested in the research level (I know not that high), teaching load, etc.

Thank you.

I have a friend who teaches there.  Hu says it's a pretty campus, with a nice faculty.  The students are Catholic working class for the most part.  The load is 4-4.  The effort for tenure is not supposed to be too arduous.  Salem and BSC are supposed to be the two decent Mass state colleges.

I think it used to be the teacher's college, and still has a good reputation for its education programs. Otherwise, I grew up in eastern Mass, so many many of my HS cohort went there. I think your assessment is pretty spot on.

This is similar to what I've heard -- a pleasant place to work.

Chime on all of the above.

Lots of working class students, most from Catholic backgrounds.  Strong ed program.  4/4 load.  No high research expectations for faculty, since it's really a teaching school.

I know this school quite well and can give you all kinds of inside information.  Send me an e-mail if you would like.  The current sentiments are correct, save for the Catholic aspect (although a lot of students are catholic).  There is a growing expectation of research, but it is still considered a teacher's college first.

Hi commprof57, two fairly specific followup questions.  First, I know Mass is really hurting economically and from what I recall reading, Patrick is trying to improve funding to the CC's but I've not read anything about funding to the state colleges.  Also, I had heard that BSC was trying to improve it's research status, but do you know if they're actually supporting the research or just pushing it?  (If you're going to "out" yourself by answering, a PM is fine).  Thank you very much for any insight.

Ptprof,
Well, everywhere is hurting economically.  It is true that all of the state colleges and universities have had their budgets cut.  However, BSC is the only school that i know of so far that hasn't laid anybody off (we have a pretty good president who makes good financial decisions).  Mass is surprisingly one of the worst for funding public higher ed, but that is something no one can control.  In terms of supporting research, the answer is yes, they do support it with some pretty good travel funds and grants.  If you are talking about time off from teaching, well then the answer is no.  It is a 4/4 load, but you can do research.  We have faculty who publish books all the time, those that publish articles and the like.  Some don't, but most of the new faculty do at least some research.

Are you sure?  Can you read Chinese?

Your professors were probably afraid of your galactic genius and did everything they could (behind the scenes) to thwart your hedginess.

It's spam.  It seems to be a bunch of links to gambling sites and the like. I see the Chinese characters for "mahjong" (repeated about ten times), "card games" (again multiple times) and (strangely enough) "Tibet." Not sure about the rest, and don't have time to run it through a translator.
