About this time last year, I posted a plea for advice about Florida vacations. I got excellent suggestions, including, "Why don't you go to the Bahamas instead?" I ended up not going anywhere because I felt I had to wait until I revised my dissertation and submitted it to a publisher. Since that didn't happen until late January, and I've had very little time off since then, I'm desperately in need of a vacation -- again.

I don't need a lot of time: 3 or 4 days should be enough. I've found a trip to Freeport for about CAD $1,000, for four nights (includes airfare and hotel). This seems like a lot of dough to blow for a couple of days on a beach, but I'm sorely tempted. And I'm not sure I'll find a better deal. Unfortunately I wouldn't be going for another month (I'd really like to get out of here in the next few weeks), but I think I can live with that. What do you think? What would you do? Should I be looking at other options? Why can't I decide anything without the Fora?

Airfare and hotel for four nights for $1000?  Let's see...on the hotel alone, that's $250 a night in high season in a warm, sunny destination; subtract out the airfare, and you're getting a really inexpensive stay in a warm, sunny destination in high season.  Um...GO!!!

Seriously, this is truly an excellent deal, you have the opportunity, and who knows when the opportunity will come around again?  Go--have a wonderful time, send us a virtual postcard (or post some photos on Flickr or wherever), and know that this forumite will be happily jealous of you!  Don't forget the sunscreen!  :)

The Bahamas is really nice.  If you get a good airfare to FL and if the weather is good (it can fluctuate this time of year) you might be able to get a better deal.  There are cheap rates for great hotels in Miami right now and other parts of Florida, e.g. under $100/night for 4 star if you look.  CA also has some good prices, but the weather can really fluctuate in December/Jan - it's cold and raining right now - definitely not beach weather.

Sounds like a good deal since it includes airfare and lodging. What's your reservation about going? As long as you wouldn't be neglecting rent, mortgage, etc- go!

If you go to Cuba, could you do a few interviews for me?

That means you'll fund the trip, right?

concordancia, I'd love to do the interviews! (Though that would make the trip decidedly less vacation-like.) However, I've decided to wait until I have Canadian citizenship before going to Cuba, just to be on the safe side. But yes, there are fabulous deals on trips to Cuba.

New wrinkle: Mom, who's in southern California for the winter, thinks I should go there and wants to pay the airfare (this despite the fact that I am in my late 40s and am perfectly capable of paying my own way). Downside: it'll take longer to get there and back.

Yeah, but it's free airfare! You can rent a car and drive south to Tijuana if it isn't sunny enough for you.
