They mandated them because I didn't follow their directives (I had no reason since they were attacking me with no good reason) and they claimed I had obsessive behavior which I didn't. What kind of a settlement am I looking at if this is successful?

You don't think that, say, threatening to sue the school for violation of privacy is a perfectly good example of said obsessive behavior?

From where I sit in my armchair, you need the therapy. Your interpretation of forumites' answers as "making light of" your situation shows that you have difficulty properly parsing communication. Therefore there are probably aspects to your original situation that you are also seeing through a distorted lens. Your noncompliance with the University's directive does not bode well for your ability to resolve this without encountering future difficulties that are far more serious and unpleasant. Stop worrying about whether or not to sue the University, unplant your heels from the ground, and go to the therapist.

I do have to chime on the 'you will not win' thing. Frankly, you will just make it a matter of public record. JUST because the Uni has a record of your compliance does NOT mean that they shared said information with any unauthorized parties. On this point, I doubt that even a stupid contingency lawyer will take on the case because you have no evidence, and you have not suffered any definable loss.

I was concerned about the release, but at that point I didn't want to get expelled. My main concern is not about the release per se but the fact they mandated this in the first place with no good reason.

You should have had an attorney look at the thing first. You signed something under duress, but then went ahead and complied. You should not have complied THEN you MIGHT have a case. OTOH, you should think that maybe something you did/said might have given the Uni a reason to take the action they did.

Ok, I am done... no wait:
I can't believe you're making so much light of my situation. Most of you on this forum think you're so much than everyone else, mostly students as I can see with you talking about how ignorant they are, etc. I'm just hurt by all of this.

well if you do not like what is on the radio, turn the dial. I hear students disparaging instructors all the time. Instructors are like all other people: we are doing a job. It is our right to complain abou it.

As others have implied, only a lawyer--with a specialty in academic litigation, and access to the details of your case--could answer your original question.  We have neither the data (which you should not provide on a public forum) nor (most of us) the training to evaluate your predicament further.

That said, several of us have outlined in a general way why such a suit might be unsuccessful, and/or unwise.  No one is "making light of" your situation.  I myself find your situation troubling from almost any vantage.  Good luck.

Misty, unlike most of the people on this board are professors, but I'm a lawyer. I agree with them on this: you have no case, so don't waste your time and energy on this.
