re-enter Higher Ed Market after consulting?

Hello All,
I posted in the Admin Forum so I thought I would also try it here...I was part of a reduction in force for a major higher education software company, B@nner was the name of the software. I was a FA Consultant for the past 3 years and prior to that a FA Counselor at a private university for almost 5 years. I am trying to get back into the university setting in FA. I have applied to several places but thus far have not had any luck. I am wondering if my experience as a consultant is hurting me at this point? I worked with over 23 different institutions from R1's to LAC, HBCU, and CC. I learned many valuable skills that are I believe are transferable.
Is my past consulting experience hurting me? I was 1 of 2 people on my consulting team of 25 who was under 30 at the time of hiring so I don't think this is an issue but maybe it is.

I think the Admin Forum was the right place to post, and I think their feedback is on the mark. I'm going to go post a question over there.
