Hi all,
Just so that you don't have to panic, I went through last year's wiki looking at schools that scheduled AHA interviews. What I found:
The average date for an interview invitation was December 9.
Nearly 1/3 of the candidates were contacted on December 9, 10 or 11, with a smaller number on the 8 or 12.
In many cases, the earlier the application due-date, the earlier the invitation. You can often assume a four-week lag-time between the deadline and invitation.
YMMV,

According to the Latin American history wiki, of 15 jobs listed, 5 have already scheduled interviews (phone or conference). Whereas for Early America, of 27+ jobs, only 1 has an interview call listed.
What I'm seeing in my area is more schools going to phone interviews and ditching the conference.

I thought this was like, historians looking for dates for AHA, kind of like the prom, where you wait and wait and then at the eleventh hour you call that person who's your buddy and you know he will say yes and he does, and then right afterward the person you really wanted as your date calls you and you're all like, "oh sh!t!" but you do the right thing and tell him you already have a date.
Seriously, thanks for posting this, Airball. I wouldn't be surprised if, with the budget uncertainties, things moved even a tad slower this year than last. The only reason things might be going faster is if places that often have multiple searches are only running one, and thus aren't sequencing. And Lorelei, I wouldn't be surprised either if what you're seeing with the phone interviews is a general trend. Lotsa places got their travel budgets ravaged.

I had a friend whose cell phone rang just before her plane left the gate, so January 5 or so. People, I tell you!

Christmas *night*---I kid you not. It was my ABD year on the market and my only AHA-based interview that year.
Next year with degree? Earliest I got was Dec 2 the latest was Dec. 18th. Friends got them everywhere from late November to two days before the conference itself. I have known of people who were tracked down at their hotels by really disorganized SCCs.
I notice that none of the searches in my dept are reported on the wiki as having made interview arrangements and all of them had done that before T'giving. Done, confirmed and the one committee doing phone interviews already started today.

I predict that this year is going to be totally wacky in AHA fields--wackier than usual, that is. My department may run a search this year, but it will definitely be "late season" as we don't have final, final, final budgetary approval.
That being said, I was once contacted on Christmas Eve night at my parents' house. I hadn't provided their number, but the SCC took a gamble and figured that the people at that number might know where to find me. Crazy. Then they never even bothered to reject me after the AHA. Bastards.

Please, let your department know I'd be willing to interview at the *very last minute*---advise them that "pride" is a quality I had beaten out of me quite a while back and I'm willing to take a cut in rank and pay. I come with a very well regarded book (well, *Choice* thought it was *essential* for libraries so there!) and given some proximity to sources (of any kind!), I'll churn that second one out very soon. Thank you for your attention and I hope to hear from you soon, Prof. Radar

Looks like a few interviews were scheduled yesterday and today so we should expect more over the next week or so but as others have pointed out, they often come late.

Same here. We have one search approved, but it got posted later than usual, and another that is still waiting in the wings. I think a lot of schools are moving very cautiously.
