Good afternoon.

When an application for a Research Fellowship asks you (me) to include "1. An explanation of your current research,
and 2. A brief statement of your next research project, in about 1000 words of non-technical language," if I submit a research statement of, say, 1087 words, will that be an acceptable length?

Many thanks.

If you are applying through a college online JRF application system, it WILL cut you off at 1000. (although you can sometimes get around this if you have the option of attaching a pdf rather than pasting text into the form) If it's a hard copy app, nobody on the committee is going to actually count the words. The kind of margin you're talking about won't be noticed.

They get so many applications that they're looking for reasons to disqualify people.  I wouldn't risk it.
