I say this because I'm teaching on a year-by-year basis (as Instructor) in a U.S. university.  There are rumors of cuts.  I can probably work here one more year, but I won't know until August.

I'm not quite ready to teach English overseas (again), but I fear that if I wait until next year to apply, I may find myself unemployed, and it may not look good for a potential employer.

Or does it matter, as long as I have the credentials, the experience, and positive references?

I cannot answer your question but I have always found that it is better to look for a job before I need one. I would apply now.

For years, being out-of-work was a serious issue with employers (in general), but I suppose that in the current economic downturn, hiring authorities will not look askance at a period of unemployment. YMMV as will the situation in higher education.

What keeps you from applying now? If you don't need it you don't have to accept it IF you get an offer! Just like eddean, I find it easier to find a job if I have one already or if I have another offer. If nothing else, having options is good for your confidence!

Thanks for the replies.  It looks like I'll get a contract for another year, so that means I'll postpone my overseas search for about a year.
