I know there are several threads on shipping costs, but most of them are either a few years out of date, or deal with intra-US or intra-Europe shipping.

I've just finished my PhD and am preparing to pack up and move home to the US next month. I will be shipping 2 floor-to-ceiling bookcases' worth of books and a filing cabinet full of photocopies of hard-to-get articles and books, and probably some bedding and odds and ends: not nearly enough for half a container, but enough that I blanch at the idea of paying the Royal Mail's rates. Can anyone recommend a good door-to-door service for 2-4 week trans-atlantic shipping?

Ask the UK Yankee people. They know everything.  And then let me know! I've already accumulated more stuff than I care to think about. I blame the auctions and amazon.uk free shipping with 5 pounds worth of books.

When I moved US to UK in the summer of 2007 I used Allied/Allied Pickfords and I don't think I had a whole container. I was really happy with the service.

I shipped a FULL 2BR flat worth (plus office) and it cost about $6-7k (US) at the time.

Your environment sounds vaguely toxic.  Or maybe just characteristically British.

I've had good experience with Seven Seas Shipping. They charge per box and provide the packaging materials in advance. They also went beyond the call of duty for us when their subcontractor UPS flaked out.
