Sorry if this is a trivial question but I can not figure out how to do this in either leopard or snow leopard.  Those icons at the bottom of the screen for the common apps.  How to modify what is the default when I login to the machine?
I have poked around on system and on the individual app help and can not find it anywhere.  Also some of mine have changed - some disappeared for example and I want them back and would get rid of others I do not use.

If you want to add an icon for a particular application, find it in the applications folder and drag it into the lineup (aka the dock). If you want to remove an icon from the dock, drag it out and let go - it disappears in a satisfying poof.

Or, when the application is running, right-click on the icon in the dock and go to Options -> Keep in Dock.  To remove, choose Options -> Remove from Dock (but the poof is more satisfying).

Excellent.  I have it working now with the drag and drop on leopard on my macbook air.  I do not have a right click on the air so I have no idea how to get the options menu, but it seems unnecessary right now.  I will try the snow leopard next.

Many thanks.  I wish they put instructions for some of these trivial things in a place where I could find them.
I figured there ought to be plenty of mac users on the forum.

I suspect that the "satisfying poof" was the mechanism by which powerpoint disappeared from the list.  I will now put it back.

Control + click.

Control + click.
On recent Macbooks and Macbook Pros, you can also right-click by placing two fingers on the trackpad and clicking (though you may need to enable that in System Preferences). I don't know if you can do that on the Macbook Air, but it's worth checking--if you can it means that you can easily right-click without either stretching your mousing hand or having to use your other hand.

Well, now you have the collective wisdom of the CHE forumites at your beck-and-call!  What more could you ask?

Ducked into our local Apple store last night and was struck by the realization that I'm probably not cool enough anymore to own a Mac-type device.

*Gasp*  I'm a PC!

Easy-peasy.  System Preferences -> Track Pad -> Tap trackpad using two fingers for secondary click.

Great collection of mac users here.  But be forewarned - if you are too helpful I'm going to start hitting you all up for advice on how to install unix software on my mac.  I have a laundry list of stuff I'd like to have on these puppies -----

You probably want to look at Fink, then.

Piece 'o cake.  First, install the Xcode tools that came with your Mac.  Second, if you don't want to run config scripts and makefiles yourself, get thee to Macports.

On preview: or Fink.  Whatever.

Ooh, this is some useful stuff!

I have been using the Mac laptop at work and the PC laptop at home and to finish up the diss, and I know the time has come to make the complete switch to the Mac as I keep trying to right click with two fingers on my PC.

That's it! I've been brainwashed!
