Good afternoon,

Potentially dumb question (but that's why I ask these things here!). I'm working on a few fellowship applications that ask for a "statement of teaching interest" (or ask for me to put that in the cover letter). I've got years of adjuncting under my belt (where I'm ABD, they call that a "fellowship") and I also have other (secondary school) teaching experience. I'm surely going to mention the adjuncting, but should I mention non-university teaching experience?

Thanks!

This is a generic dissertation write-up fellowship (that's particularly targeted to those ABDs who "add diversity") and it states "cover letter, including teaching interests at X University." I think I'll mention my non-uni experience in passing, as a clause in a sentence, but focus on what I've taught as an adjunct and what I'd be interested in teaching.

Talk first about your college teaching experience then transition to your other experience. "I have a diversity of teaching experiences..."

I would frame it as something like..... "since I have also taught high-school for x years, I have a good understanding of the academic and personal background of our incoming students and how to help them bridge the gap to college/university level work"....or something like that. If diversity is a focus of your program you could add something about your own experience as a "diverse" person/first generation college graduate/other descriptions that might apply.
