I'm designing a class on fans and fandom and, if you have time, I'd love help brainstorming one or two things. (The moderator said this was the forum for such a question.)

Do you know of any good documentaries on fans or fandom? I'm ideally looking for earlier forms of fandom: Beatlemania, Hollywood golden era fan culture, Elvis' legions, Rocky Horror, something on fan conventions... Any personal favorites?

I've got my materials nailed on copyright, vidding, spoiler culture, World of Warcraft, and Star Trek. So while I would love recommendations, they're not really the focus of my planning right now.

Thank you for your help and, if you want, I can share the final results with you.

I love Galaxy Quest for talking about fandom, even though it's not a documentary. There are a couple of Trek documentaries, but that's not what you're looking for. Sometimes the best place to find documentaries of fandom is among DVD extras.

An interesting recent one is "Confessions of a Superhero" about the people who dress like famous superheroes and make a living taking pictures with tourists in LA (some are "fans" and others are just trying to make a living).

It's either going to be Galaxy Quest or Trekkies for the Trek section, yes. Unless there's a better option?

Thanks. I've got that in my syllabus. The Busse and Hellekson collection is quite good.

If you are collecting self-reflexive fictional representations of fandom as well as scholarly literature, Supernatural recently did a sci fi convention episode.  I haven't seen it yet, but it might be worth looking at.  Here's the review from Billie Doux, who runs a sci fi review site of which I am very fond:

I'm going to de-lurk to chime in:
I haven't seen it, but have heard good things about Darkon, which is on LARP-ing (live-action role-playing). http://www.darkonthemovie.com/

I enjoyed Michael Chabon's musings on fandom in several of his essays in his most recent book, Manhood for Amateurs.

I just recently saw an interesting bit on Beatles' fans in the Soviet Union (How the Beatles Rocked the Kremlin).  Not sure if this is exactly what you are looking for and I think it overplays the Beatles' role in overthrowing the Soviet system, but it might just fit the bill.  Plus, the students might enjoy the stories detailing the lengths fans went to secure copies of bootlegs.

Not really what you're looking for, but it might be useful anyway: the website TV Tropes includes fanfics for some of their tropes, and some tropes are about fans themselves.  Lots of fan reaction on the site.  Here's a sample:

There's a DVD called Done the Impossible, about fans getting Universal to make the movie Serenity after Fox cancelled the series upon which it was based, Firefly. It's pretty good, and dips into other aspects of fan cultures like filk (music) and costuming.
