Monty Python always gets blank stares. "Help! Help! I'm being oppressed!!" earned me no chuckles in class, just confused looks. Strong Bad http://www.homestarrunner.com/sbemail.html, surprisingly, is also news to my students. My Trogdor references fell on deaf ears. When I expressed my disbelief that they had never heard of Homestar Runner, one class told me "It's probably something from your generation." I'm 26!! Southpark and Family Guy references my students always pick up on.

I thought I was the only one! It is truly amazing how much staying power those lyrics combined with that music can be! It has to be over 30 years since I've seen it. Must be Ginger. She always made a memorable impact. Ginger? Pfft. Mary Ann!

Mary Ann is, evolutionarily speaking, the better choice because she is more resourceful--you know, cooking, sewing, caregiving, and all that. ;-)

Every year, fewer and fewer of my students have seen Raiders of the Lost Ark. Which is too bad, because that Nazi face-melting scene is how I explain the idea that there are certain divine things that human beings are not meant to know. Or pry the lid off of.
Also, just earlier this week, another Historical Marker That Sets Me Apart From Them (it sits on the shelf next to the fall of the Berlin Wall): I am apparently the only one left who remembers when we started saying Beijing instead of Peking.

Confused and sad. Or happy. I'm not sure...

I have the same thing with Star Trek, the Borg, and Hitchkers guide to the galaxy. I doubt most of them know who Mr. Spock is, much less that he has "green blood."
Total silence when I said something along the lines of collagen not stretching unless you're Reed Richards.
Not a clue.
The Fantastic Four movies are not that old! I was more partial to DC comics than Marvel when I had time/money to collect way back in the day, but I know who the characters are!
I never much cared for the Monty Python movies. No one is perfect.

I totally missed the Calcutta/ Mumbai thing, too. And I figure geography was much easier when their were fewer countries in the Balkans, Eastern Europe and Western Asia.

They don't know Mary Lou Retton, or really any Olympic athletes prior to Michael Phelps.

They haven't seen the first of anything - Star Wars, Die Hard.
They don't know what the Bay of Pigs was.

I had students this semester who had no clue when the Civil Rights movement was. A couple guessed in the 1800's sometime.

Some of these, I get, but what kind of parent would raise a child without having them watch Monty Python??

I let my 8 year old watch the French taunting bit from the Holy Grail. She thought it was pretty funny, so I've got hope. Spouse didn't think I should be showing her though. My students have never seen Close Encounters of the Third Kind. I try to point out how that mountain is a volcanic plug, but I get blank stares.

Wait, are you one of my sockpuppets? I just showed that slide today and got the same reaction. Even after going "Doo doo doo doo dooooooooo."
