I have a full time research assistant who has been great help in off-loading some of my daily responsibilities that I even have time to play this forum a little. I also use two office assiatants once in a while. What is the appropriate way to show my appreciation in the holiday season? Inviting them for a lunch? Some small gifts or gift cards? Ideas will be appreciated.

I take them to lunch somewhere nice and give them Starbucks gift cards. They always seem to love this.

Oh isn't it nice to tip folks who get a regular paycheck. I particularly love the idea of tipping my regular mail carrier.... he makes more than I do.....

BUT, Starbucks cards are nice......

How much value for the Starbucks gift cards? Honestly, I have never been to a Starbucks.

You mean that students need to tip their professor?

You can get gift cards there for $5 and up. I usually give them $10 or $15 on the cards. It really is a nice way to express your appreciation for their work.

They will love it. It really is the thought that counts. It is just a small way to show that you appreciate them.

I appreciate those who help me by accepting a mandated furlough so that they can keep their regular paycheck.

I took a collection for our staff assistant (who works for several faculty) to give them a nice bonus (check).  It seemed to go over very well.  My cleaning person and my dog walker both get checks as well.  Given the state of the economy I recommend checks (cash) over other gifts if you can afford to pay some extra cash.

In my department, we all pitch in and get our administrative assistant a (large) gift certificate for Target or our local Big Grocery Chain.

Many years ago, the gift certificates were for local upscale restaurants or boutiques, but we wised up.

When I had a staff of research assistants, analysts, and coordinators working for me, I bought them gift baskets from Costco. For around $20-25 each, you can get a nice basket of chocolatey treats.

I give a cash gift to the departmental assistants.

Do you give a gift to your TAs? I'm considering this. Maybe a gift certificate would be appropriate.

I give baked goods to our office staff.  I put loaves of pumpkin bread on my desk with a note for the cleaning staff to take it.  I give my RA a mug and a pound of coffee, and usually take him or her to lunch.

The best gift I got in this situation was a gift certificate to a local bookstore (new and used books).  I used to be at a place where a card to Starbucks wouldn't have gone over well but a card to the locally owned coffee house would have been amazing.
