I read another, similar story about a presentation that danah boyd [sic] gave where the same type of thing happened. She asserts that if she could have seen the Twitterfall she could have adjusted to the audience feedback and changed the presentation on the fly. How the hell can you read your presentation AND the Twitterfall at the same time?
That's exactly what I said: I was struck by one respondent who claimed that he responded to the tweets by modifying his talk as he went and I wonder if that's do-able for most speakers. Many speakers have enough trouble making through the talk in a timely way without omitting any points or getting distracted without also keeping an eye on the various tweets to see who is saying what about the talk.
Except I apparently didn't notice the gender of the respondent. But you said it better. Perhaps I need to work on conciseness.

It does seem like a significant part of the problem in this case is that the conference tweets were being projected in real-time behind the speaker.
This is the part I don't understand either. I can see setting it up for the conference in general, maybe having a twitterfall in the lobby. What's the use it having it up there behind the speaker? If the speaker is going to address comments made via twitter then it seems more like a Q&A session than a presentation. Not that you couldn't do that, it just seems like a different thing altogether.

And if it is for the purpose of Q&A, then Q&A protocol should apply. No "this is boring; can you believe she wore that" type comments should appear.

I'm an ole fart, and I think this kind of behavior is juvenile and disgusting.
Seriously, if people can't listen to a less-than-perfect talk now and then, how do they expect their students to react?
And the mean-girl mentality does proliferate, too.

I'm with The Fiona, but then I can't stand sitting behind people who do the old-fashioned passing the notebook back and forth snark.

Then people would be pithy and inscribe only the best and most immortal snark. Kinda like "Thou shalt not covet" and its ilk. The Fiona

You are so wise and true. They may have had slave labor, concubinage, cannibalism, and beriberi, but they did not have tabloids. The Fiona

In order to convince me that I should care what someone twitters during a talk, you'd have to convince me that ANYTHING that ANYONE twitters matters. And to do that, you'd have to convince me that having a cell phone on which to twitter matters.

Was cuneiform on parchment? Anyway, I'd be hapy to see the interiors of all buildings block cell phones.

It'd be hieroglyphics on parchment.
Wouldn't that be hieroglyphics on papyrus? Personally, I'm thrilled to be living in the Age of Computers but I don't want to have one embedded in my skull or stitched into my sneakers or clutched in my hand at all times. Or even most of the time. Social networking and collaboration are overrated. Isolation and loneliness have led to some of the greatest discoveries of all times. Would Einstein have been better off in his patent office if he had had a cell phone and Facebook?
