I agree with the others, you should mention about the salary but make sure to say it "properly". The article "8 Things You Didn't Know About Negotiating Salaries" which I read from the site www.interviewmastermind.com will give you more insight on what to do and how to negotiate your salary better. Good luck! Landon, a nice upside of the consultant lifestyle is the ability to spend a Monday morning leisurely posting spams. (Oops, or reading them!) <scurries off to do something more productive>

Sorry Landon, but I'm pretty sure I got you pegged.
I do hope you at least first put on clean underwear before joining our forum.

why are you so rude? why are you up like that? I'm new here but I'm surprised that some senior members here act indifferent to newbies. You don't have the right to drag Landon's name here and I don't even know why you're doing that. I'm one of the many people who can attest to Landon's credibility and I don't believe whatever you say. Jealousy won't do no good.

This is hilarious.
"Loriane" is testifying to her own credibility! I believe all of Landon/Loriane's posts now!

Just one caveat for those on the thread. We're in the midst of doing a hiring at my uni, and trying to get it wrapped up before the hiring freeze/lose the line situation we will likely face in January. I know my boss is not going to get in a negotiating contest with people--we have a good candidate pool, and can move quickly down the list. So negotiating time may be short. That said, I don't think that your offer can be acted upon by the school until after Thanksgiving anyway (we're all but shutting down starting tomorrow) so you have some breathing room.

Oh heck, I missed Landon's response yesterday. Kedves, thanks for saving at least part of it. Was there more?

What is the usual time to respond? Is there room for negotiation when they mention you start at Level (fill in the blank) and Step (fill in the blank).
If you're in a public system that has fine gradations of salary (levels and steps was my clue, there), then your best negotiation strategy is to bring to their attention experience and/or education they may not have considered that would entitle you to a change in step or level. You need to ask why you got put in that particular slot and find reasons that they have undercounted your qualifications -- extra years of experience hidden in your background? More scholarly work than they had previously counted? Or simple adding error. It's completely possible to be innocent and just ask - for your future knowledge - how they calculate it. Doing that got me a 5K raise when they realized they had just calculated incorrectly. I didn't even have to point it out; in explaining it to me, they discovered it.

Hi all,
I have decided to accept the offer, my SO would be covered by their health coverage, and relocation for my SO is very possible. Thank you all for the words of encouragement. Now, it is time to figure out how I will move????

Thank you all! Insight provided by members on this form is always valuable.....It got me thinking about some of the best advice I received earlier on when I first discovered the power of the forum. Here is goes in no particular order:
"Under no circumstances should you call again. It is no where near August 1. They may still be making up their minds, and you are painting yourself as needy and annoying. STFU and sit on your hands."---Larryc (Very true, I stopped doing this, and well, to my surprise it worked....no wonder why he is the director of the STFU Center)
"Dude, chill."--sciencephd
"This is the equivalent of a student sending you email at midnight and then another at 3 am asking to know why you have not responded, and then another at 3:30 am... you get the idea."--voxprincipalis
"You have broken one of the unwritten rules of job seeking in academia. Back away from the phone, and stop acting like you don't know the rules. Not knowing the rules can actually work against you."---systeme_d
"Don't take this seriously. Some posters think they're being funny, but they just fuel anxieties. Ignore the above post. It is not helpful. In fact, I think it's cruel to toy with people who are already worried sick."
The Fiona
"If you are going for a sales/marketing job, it is good to inundate them with phone calls. Shows persistence, which you need in sales, but in academia?
No. No. No."----prytania3
That is it for now, I am sure many more will follow!
