Thank you for your interest in Christopher Newport University.  Some information about our University may be useful to you.

Christopher Newport University is a 4-year baccalaureate institution offering 3 specialized master’s degrees in Environmental Science, Teaching, and Applied Physics and Computer Science.  CNU never has been a community college.  It was founded in 1960 as a two-year branch of the College of William and Mary.  CNU (formerly Christopher Newport College) became a 4-year, baccalaureate degree-granting institution in 1971, gaining independence from the College of William and Mary in 1977.  It became Christopher Newport University in 1992.   Unlike older Universities in the Commonwealth, we have not had as long to build our reputation, but we are an energetic, collegial, and intellectually engaged campus.

The University has made tremendous academic strides and important additions to its physical campus in the past several years.  Let me offer some current examples and statistics to illustrate:

Fall 2009 Freshman Cohort Enrollment Data.  CNU proudly serves the sons and daughters of Virginia and houses 94% of its freshmen in on-campus residence halls.  Our average SAT score has increased by 240 points (to 1200) since 1996.

      Total Applications:  8500

      Total Admitted:   4422

      Total Enrolled:   1213

      Transfer students:    172

      Residential:   94%

      In-state:   91%

      White:    79%

      Non-white:   21%

      SAT mean:   1200

      Average High School GPA 3.62

2009 Persistence and Graduation.  With special programs such as learning communities, CNU has dramatically increased its retention and graduation rates, producing trends that continue upwards.

      Class of 2008 retention:    80%

      6-year graduation rate:    58.19%

      2008-09 undergraduate degrees conferred: 955

Faculty Profile and Faculty Life.  The University is committed to expanding its faculty to a full-time professoriate of 300 members, reducing teaching loads from the current 3-4 to 3-3, and reducing class sizes still further from the current average of 23 students. CNU prides itself on careful selection and mentoring of high-quality faculty capable of building and sustaining a record of strong teaching and a productive scholarly agenda.

      Full-time faculty    236

      Terminal degrees   85%

      Tenure rate, Fall 2009   93%

      Tenure rate since 2002   87%

      White:     89.5%

      Non-white:    10.5%

Teaching load:     4-3 (moving toward 3-3 nominal load)

      Average class size:    23

Classes with 49 or fewer students:  94.6%

Of these, with 25 students or fewer: 60%

A 2008 survey of our tenure stream faculty by the Harvard-based Collaborative on Academic Careers in Higher Education indicated that 100% of pre-tenure faculty responding would recommend their departments as places to work and 94% are satisfied or very satisfied with their department as a place to work.  96% agreed or strongly agreed with the statement, “My institution is collegial.”  89% are satisfied or very satisfied with how well they ‘fit’ at CNU.

Campus Facilities.  Between 2000-2005, CNU opened three new freshman residence halls and an upper-class housing facility.  In the past five years, CNU has opened a world-class performing arts center (2004-5), a new student union (2006), a state-of-the-art library (2007), and a modern academic building housing six academic departments (January 11, 2010).  Under construction is a 21st century Integrated Science Center (to open in two phases, 2011/2012) and in planning is a third academic building slated to open in 2013.  No other college in Virginia, or likely, the nation, can say as much.

In sum, Christopher Newport University is a growing, vibrant institution with bright, energetic students, a committed, collegial, and productive faculty, and a campus that will soon rival that of any institution, public or private.  We welcome the opportunity to share our story with you.

Sincerely,

Dr. Mark Padilla

Provost

Something tells me he hasn't read the majority of the comments on the first page of the thread.
