Although my PhD program is great at providing information about research jobs (or lack thereof), no one seems to know anything about CC's. I'm very interested in applying at CC, having attended one myself and being interested in teaching and community service. What is the hiring cycle at these schools? I've looked at various journals and school websites and so few have any full-time positions advertised. Are these not opened up until later in the Spring? Or are there so few available? (I'm in the humanities, if that matters.)

When I did a full-scale CC search in 2006/2007, only a few jobs were listed before Jan.1. I'd say 75% of positions were adverstised in Jan/Feb. Most of my interviews were scheduled for Mar./Apr./May. There were plenty of legitimate CC advertisements well into the summer. My current CC likes to advertise in May or even June.

I'll second this. When I did my job searches (n=2), most CCs seemed to hire during the semester before they needed someone. If the job started in the fall, they hired in the spring, and vice versa. Only a few seemed to hire in the summer.

My CC is still in the midst of 'discussing' what positions will be approved.  We won't be advertising until early-mid spring semester.

At my CC job announcements are usually made in January, and application deadline is early March. We usually do phone interviews in March and on-campus interviews in April and May. Hopefully the administration then decides to pick someone quickly by May, but unfortunately they often wait for a variety of reasons until June or even July to decide and make an offer.

Just pay attention to the usual sources: the Chronicle, higheredjobs.com, etc., and specific CC websites ("employment opportunities" or "job openings").  When you see an position of interest, apply.

What everyone else said, but I'll add that some CC's have ongoing adjunct recruitment.  Check the CC's website/employment page to see if they accept applications for adjunct work at any time--if you're interested in adjuncting, that is.

And in an area where there are a lot of CCs (e.g., a big city and surrounding counties), check the Sunday job ads in the local/city newspaper. I'm surprised how many of our ABD students have found adjunct work that way, and at least one recent grad landed a TT job through a Sunday newspaper ad.

I suppose the principle is: in an area with a number of colleges and universities, a CC doesn't need to spring for a national ad to draw a very satisfactory pool of qualified people who have ties to the area and don't want to move.

I've worked at two CCs and been interviewed at a third.  Most job postings go up in January through March, as indicated already.

But I also want to reiterate that sometimes the job postings go up in July or August.

A college in my CC system hired two people after posting jobs in the summer. Another one didn't hire anyone and their job posting is still listed. That particular college usually has one new position each year in English, due to the rapidly expanding student population on that side of town.

Last year in my CC system of seven colleges and fifty thousand students there were six English faculty positions.

The CC has fifteen full-time positions in all fields listed right now. That is an unusually high number for the fall.

I just went and looked at the website of my old CC. They have several full-time positions listed that opened this month or last month and close this month or next month. These include history, gov't, psych, sociology. And nursing and biology (which are popular openings at my CC).

In my state, CCs often wait until after budget hearings (in March) before they advertise a job for the next academic year.

Agree with zuzu 100%. Most of my CC interviews were very late in the game. And yes, I remember you zuzu from 2006/2007 job seeking period!!!

I applied for my temp VAP slot in March. By July I had given up hope....... phone rings and the position is available..... can I interview tomorrow? (rush to dry clean the funeral suit) Sure can! Hired same day!

The CCs look the semester before, but some are under severe budgetary constraints that they cannot do the interviews until the last minute.
