Does anyone know if a searchable database of political/editorial cartoons exists? Or if I can limit searching to cartoons on any of the major databases?

This is the first time I've needed to find some.  If it matters, I'm looking for one around the issues of development in the global south, food aid, state building in the South, issues like that.

I just tried searching http://delicious.com for "political cartoons" and came up with 3600 results. You may find something there.

I had a professor in grad school who loved to show us development-themed cartoons; he would clip them on travels.  The best always came from British papers.  It might be worth going to individual paper sites and seeing if they have archives.  Or finding names of cartoonists and searching for them.

Thanks. I never did know what delicious was. Still kind of vague, but it looks useful.

And you're right, I have found a bunch in British newspapers.

Daryl Cagle runs a very good blog about editorial cartoons that has a ton of stuff sorted by topic:

I keep coming up to that page but I can't get the search to work. And I even tried searching for Obama. I am going to try it again.

It is a social bookmarking site, so it is like a database of everyone's bookmarks. This is searchable so that you can have the advantage of looking by keywords into everyone's bookmarks. A resource I find very useful, often better than google for specific items. Good luck!

My favorite political cartoonist is Zapiro, a South African genius. You can find archives of his cartoons, conveniently catalogued by political personality and subject, online at The Mail and Guardian (http: www.mg.co.za). You don't need to purchase a subscription to access the archives.

I imagine you'll be able to find several cartoons that suit your needs, as Zapiro addresses local, regional, and global social problems.

Thank you again. I am enjoying researching the non-US political cartoons. It really is an eye-opener. Living in the UK has made me realize (again) how US centric my thinking and assumptions are. You'd think I'd learn by now but no.  Oh well, keeps me humble.

Thread hijack alert: another chime for Delicious. It's like bookmarking websites, although with better tags and good note taking. The combination of Evernote, Delicious, and Endnote make me happy.

But it never occurred to be to search other delicious tags, which is its prime value, I bet. I'm on that now.
