Go to your discipline's wiki from last year and compare the due dates and initial contact dates. That will tell you what you need to know.

Our deadline was a month ago. We are aiming for a long list by the end of this month. We plan to move to a short list/ campus interviews in January, with an eye to making an offer by the end of that month.

We will send out a round of refusals after the long list is established, but sometimes, we don't refuse everyone who didn't make the long list right away-- we may hold back on a few files from the top of the B pile, until later in the process.

Best of luck!

The SC has to coordinate 4 to 6 people (with various levels of efficiency and interest) getting a chance to review some 100 or so application packages with something approaching intelligence then having time and opportunity to meet together.  In most places, they're doing this with a full course load (if not also overloads to cover the department shortfall they're trying to fill), regular (other) service responsibilities, their own publication and research, etc.

Normally, the SC wants to get decisions done in a hurry (so that odd-goings-on don't result in loss of funding and so that quality candidates don't get taken out of the race).

Realistically, a month is about the earliest you could expect.  6 to 8 weeks is not unheard of.
