Now I have The Boxer stuck in my head.

Now that you mention it, I can't think of a more perfect theme song for the academic job search...

Blowin' in the Wind?

I was going to ask Timurid which lyrics from The Boxer were the most relevant:

"...and he carries the reminders of every glove that laid him down and cut him till he cried out..."  or

"...all lies in jest till a man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest..."

Blowin' in the Wind would work, too.  How about Hit Me With Your Best Shot?  Or, back to Simon & Garfunkel, Sounds of Silence for the times when the SC is a little slow in responding?

Desolation Row, perhaps?

And someone says, "You're in the wrong place, my friend
You better leave"...

Yes, I received your letter yesterday
(About the time the door knob broke)
When you asked how I was doing
Was that some kind of joke?
All these people that you mention
Yes, I know them, they're quite lame

Hmmm...maybe we need a new thread.  "Songs that describe the academic job search?"  Those song threads are pretty popular, you know.
