I propose a new forum to discuss tech issues: computers, AV equipment, all-things Microsoft, Iphone resurrections, and so on.  These topics are scattered to the four winds of the forum, but are highly useful to most of us.  When I go a-Googling for computer help, I often land in fora populated by acronym-loving geeks.  Here, forumites are pretty tech-savvy and willing to explain in plain language that even the most befuddled academic might understand.

So long as it doesn't get outsourced to the folks over at ProfHacker.

I move for a vote, or begging to the moderators, or whatever is next.

The natural disaster board (Katrina) is very seldom used now, and the Schools & College board is never used for its intended purpose.  It would tidy things up if both were put somewhere else, with sticky pins (or whatever the term is).  That would free up some space on the page for this new Tech Forum.  I think the Libraries forum should exist as its own thing, although I don't understand why it has to be a special topic when Administrative Track is not.  But in the interest of convenience, maybe the Tech forum could go down there.

I also like the idea of a tech forum.

As for intended purposes, it seems to me that there's always some cross-over between Job-Seeking Experiences and The Interview Process.  Or, is that just me?

I'm for the Tech Forum as well.  Even if we can't gather together all the old tech question threads, it would be so nice to have new tech-related threads together in one place.

Agreed!  Please, moderators, many of us would find a tech forum very, very helpful.  Some of us need technical help and advice.  Some of us can provide it.  Help us to find one another!  Please??  :)

Yes and no.  It's like the difference between tenure track and the contract faculty board.  We like our caste systems, and we must be habituated to them early.

Yes, it would be great to have a forum for these questions that most of us have about hardware and software.

I'm glad this idea is well-received.  It's something I've wanted to suggest for some time now.

I'm for the Tech Forum as well.  Even if we can't gather together all the old tech question threads, it would be so nice to have new tech-related threads together in one place.

The mods have moved old threads to shiny, new fora.  It's possible.

I also like the idea of streamlining the fora.  I suggest moving inactive fora like Katrina and Schools and Colleges to an "archive" section, where the threads would be available to read, but not open for new posts.  And maybe combining Administrative Track with Deans, Dept. Heads, etc. into a single forum called simply "Adminicritters".

I agree that a tech forum would be much more useful than some of the defunct fora that clutter up the front page.  MODS MODS MODS!

Count me in.  I'd thought about making such a request, too.  Having all the tech stuff in one location would make it so much easier to remember "where did I see that tip about XYZ?".  I agree, too, that the Katrina and School/College child boards are probably past their prime.

Thanks, RealFrancie!

How would this relate to the 'online teaching' child-board of 'in the classroom'?  Is there going to be overlap?    Or is the tech forum for mostly hardware?  (Overlap is fine, I'm just wondering.)

I'm in favor.  Until I persuade Wegie and Dept_geek to come live in my city and solve all my problems for me, I'd like to have online advice facilitated.
