Howdy,

I'm in a tenured position at one Community College and I'm looking to apply to other Community Colleges to escape the toxicity of my current campus.  Anyone out there in forum-land have experience on moving from one CC to another.  If so, what happened to your tenure?  Did you come in to your new position with tenure?  A shortened clock, etc...?   Nothing?  Anything else I should know?

Thanks!

One thing to consider is that if the other CC you are moving to has tenure as well.  I have noticed that some CC's in some states do not offer tenure, while others do.  Might be something to consider.

I have to second fastelg. For example, my CC doesn't have tenure, only one year contracts at first, two year contracts later. We do have de facto tenure though. One has to be a total dud in the classroom or embezzled money or something like that to not get one's contract renewed. However, this may vary from campus to campus.

In my state, everyone casually refers to it as "tenure," but in official documents, it's called a "permanent appointment." I don't know why, but I would guess that "tenure" can be a charged word in a fiscally conservative state where CCs are held accountable to the taxpayers.

Is there any advantage to working for a CC that does not offer tenure???  I have been getting ready to apply to some CC's and they offer one year contracts, for the first two years.  Following two years of "acceptable" evals they then award three year contracts with a review once every three years.  Would this be "de facto tenure?"

No, they are usually in right-to-work states. Think Virginia.

Hi,

I've only been applying to other jobs that are listed as tenure-track.  I believe that very long ago past practice at my school was to offer tenure to professors tenured from other community colleges, but since I've been there I haven't witnessed this.

Anyone else have any experience moving from one community college to another? Prytania, do you?  Others?

Anecdotes?  Innuendos?  Rumors?

I moved from a four-year institution with a few graduate students to a CC.  The new school did not discuss a possibility of early tenure.  I suspect that, given the job market, you won't have a chance of it.  It might've been different if I'd moved with tenure, but then I wouldn't have moved.

I would in your position start looking for jobs.  If you get a nibble, ask about tenure (or not) at that time.  If they make you an offer without tenure, then negotiate for a shortened clock or whatever.

Unfortunately, I think conjugate gives good advice.

No, I have never switched jobs. I think my cc may have the best working conditions in the country. I don't even browse the want ads.
