There is a lot of disparity in our college. Some chairs are on campus most Mondays-Fridays and some are hard to find at all. I am not a department chair myself and I'm wondering if there are benefits to being physically on campus.

Six or seven, except over some major holidays or when I occasionally take a vacation.
Yes, I have no life. Why did you need to ask?

I agree – you should have a 6 and 7 button in your survey.
I suppose I could do it in half the time & long distance but my program would really suffer.
Having no life comes with the job - sometimes I have to schedule dinners with the spouse on my calendar so the AA wont overwrite my evening plans.

For me it is five, but am occasionally called in on a sixth day for open houses, parents' weekends, and so on. I know one chair who comes in four days per week and stays home one day to do research. But he is on campus for over ten hours on the days he is there and can be reached by his assistant and by the dean when he is at home in case of emergency.

Well, I guess I'm now a member of Reading Incomprehension Club, at least during afternoon hours... Not a chair. FWIW, my dean expects chairs to be available whenever needed (or have a designated substitute) including being on campus roughly 8:00 - 4:30 M-F.

OP, can you revise your poll to include the options of 6 and 7 days per week?

Please learn the difference between "it's" and "its." I'm sorry, but "it's" is not a possessive!

I'm on leave now, but when I was chair I was in the office by 9:30, five days per week, and on weekends if there was anything official going on.

The really important question is what kind of administrator are you? If you are in a small department and in a 3 year rotation elected by the faculty, then you are not expected to be full time--or should not be. If you "serve at the pleasure" of a higher administrator and have an open-ended appointment then you are probably fulltime. In my case I easily have as much admin. work as can fill the day!

I'm with ursula. M through F, in by 9 or 9:30, try to get out by 5, but sometimes later. And of course the numerous "events" one has to attend after hours.
My dean would MURDER a chair who regularly was not available (like my predecessor!)

By request, I have revised the poll to include 6 and 7 days per week. This is very interesting to me.

I'm not a chair, and I'm not sure how many days a week my chair (who is wonderful) is on campus, but I have spotted him on campus most days a week.
What I do know is that he seems to be available by e-mail 24-7. It doesn't matter when I shoot him a question--Saturday midnight, Tuesday 2 a.m., Sunday afternoon--he's almost always back to me within the hour. It's eerie. I hope he's OK.

I shudder to think what sort of body count that would result in round here..... Though, to be fair, in my part of the sub-division most chairs are around at critical times, and our dean encourages us to to spend one weekday a week at home concentrating on research. This semester she is aiming to lead by example in this endeavor.

I recently emailed my dean to say that I'm spending February in New Zealand; he wished me a good trip. (And yes, I'll still have my job when I get back....)

I do that: Stuff comes up that can't wait. I try to respond to any issue within 2 hours--often I can reply right away. An iPod helps!

I'm doing my level best not to be our next chair-- but I am our current chair's designated substitute. S/he is on campus 4 days a week; s/he protects one weekday for research, and that's when I'm expected to be around. S/he is also on e-mail 7 days a week.
