So I had my usual perscriptions filled last week, and I noticed the pills were a little different (except one which hasn't gone off patent).

Anyway, they are just different generic brands than the generic brands I'm used to taking, and all they do is make me sleepy...

In fact, I think I'll go have another nap now.

Please call your pharmacist and check to see that you were given the right prescriptions. It never hurts to check and sometimes they do make mistakes.

While generics are identical in terms of the active ingredient(s), there can be considerable variety in the supposedly "inert" ingredients. And in some cases there are synergistic elements involved, so changes in the base can make things work better or worse--at least in my experience. I totally agree that you ought to call to make sure you've gotten the right position, and if it is the correct pill you should tell them that you're reacting oddly. Perhaps they can replace them with your original generic formulation.

I had once wondered about the same thing (i.e., pills varying in shape and color from month to month) and asked at our local Walgreen's. According to the pharmacist there, big companies buy their generic drugs from whichever manufacturer is cheapest at the time they put in an order, so theoretically, your medication could be from a different factory each month. Generics apparently also have no rules on the shape, size, and color of each medication, and yes, the inactive ingredients may vary among manufacturers. I'd ask at your pharmacy, too. These days, all I do anymore is hope my meds aren't made in China.

The FDA website has a useful search function of all approved drugs:
http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/Scripts/cder/DrugsatFDA/index.cfm?fuseaction=Search.Search_Drug_Name

You can look up the various generic formulations approved for each drug, etc.

It's the right prescription. It's the type of generics. Maybe I will have to go to a different drugstore even if I am partial to my 24-hour CVS.

And in the morning, I'm just so sleepy. Usually I wake up at the crack of dawn without an alarm. Now I need about 3 alarms.
