Toast with the March Hare's homemade marmalade rocks. (She's now featuring kumquat and orange-pomegranate varieties.)

Recipes?

It helps to have kumquat trees in your yard. (California is not all bad, after all.) I will check with her on recipes.

I will observe that the toaster is the single most energy-inefficient kitchen gadget there is.  A toaster oven does not spend so much electricity for the same level of toasting.  I should consider a toaster oven, but as it happens (one of those odd stories) I have two toasters already, so I don't need a toaster oven.  I haven't even taken the second one out of the box.

Finally, I will cite the famous statistician Mark Kac (pronounced Katz) and his story of "Oh toast!" available at this Google Books link.

I forgot to chime in on the wonder that is today's toaster oven.  My Oster does a wonderful job - best ever - even tho' it takes nearly 10 minutes.  But all that is worthwhile is worth waiting for.

I love toast. One of my favorite meals as a kid was Ovaltine and toast. I like mine lightly toasted and well-buttered. Occasionally, peanut butter or orange marmalade is a nice change. I eat other jams and jellies just to get them out of the cupboard, although a good homemade strawberry is almost as good as the marmalade.

I'm ashamed to say that your question makes me think of this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRq_SAuQDec

My apologies.

Why ashamed?  Is it because you would prefer a crumpet?  Or a triple fried egg sandwich with chili sauce and chutney?

It's just that a mug of tea and a slice of buttered toast are my favorite meal. And here I am, mocking an overeager toaster. It's hypocrisy.

Today I had cinnamon toast for breakfast. But lately I've been having home-made, whole grain bread (the Cook's Illustrated recipe) toasted, naturally, with goat cheese and strawberry jam. It's hard to beat.

Whoa.  I never even thought of the goat cheese + jam possibilities.

Off to experiment.

When I was a kid we'd often have toast with butter and Dutch hagelslag. I never talked about my breakfast much at school because saying you had toast with chocolate jimmies was just weird.

Today I'm more of a toast-and-peanut-butter fan, particularly when I'm under the weather. I just feel better.

Crunchy peanut butter, mind.

Bagels sent into the toaster oven with the curly shaved chocolate variety and then slathered with cream cheese is just lovely!  (I'm not big into crunchy toast toppings, myself.  The little bit of melting is just perfect.)

I've been making my own bread so my toast is extra-awesome. I am a big fan of toast slathered with (salted) butter and honey. I also like toast as the foundation of an egg & cheese sandwich.

I think I'm going to convert to a toaster oven pretty soon - I've been hesitant because my counter space is already pretty small, but you all are convincing me.

My toaster oven takes up 86% of my counter space, but I still love it.  And Bewildered, you're a braver soul than I; if I made my own bread, I'd be too big to get out my door.  I am a carb whore.

Is a toaster oven sturdy enough to place something else on it?  If so the loss of counter space might not be too bad.  I could, for instance, put a spoon rest or bread box on it if it would support the weight, and not lose more than a few square inches.

This baby is a hundred and thirty bucks off regular price, too!

But it doesn't have a safe-to-touch exterior, which would mean I wouldn't want to put something else on it (at least not something plastic or paper).

We have friend who have this one.  It does a lovely job for them, but I can't see getting one myself.  We have this one, which, we think, works just as well.  Also, I think we're going to get a regular toaster from my in-laws, who have a bunch they got years ago from opening bank accounts.

We have both a toaster oven and a regular toaster. Actually, it's not a regular toaster -- it's the Egg-and-Muffin Toaster. Put bread in the slots, an egg in the tiny skillet, and a slice of precooked meat on the warming tray, and you have a ready-to-assemble sandwich in five minutes. Yum.

Due to this thread, I had wheat toast with raspberry peach champagne jam instead of my usual milk and cereal for breakfast today.

I think the best use of toast is for bruschetta, yum!  And toast points with Welsh Rarebit brings back some fond childhood memories.

And this recipe looks rather nice - http://www.finecooking.com/recipes/warm-cheese-mushroom-toasts.aspx

Of course, I discover this thread the day that I am trying to restrict my caloric intake. Y'all are killin' me here.

God, I love sourdough toast, with butter, the sourer the better.

I will go in my corner and weep now. Or break down, get the toast, and do an extra half-hour on the bike tomorrow.
