I've belonged to mine (American Anthropological Ass'n) since my first day in grad school for precisely the reasons Blokus articulates. But it's well known that anthropologists are weird. Also, by and large my various institutions have paid the fees. But I agree as well that the fees are getting ridiculously high.
Of course, I also belong to NPR, even though it doesn't advance my career.
Yet.
