I sent an app out once, and received a quick reply (2 - 3 days) to send more documents - letters, transcripts, go online and complete a full app, blah, blah, blah...  So I dutifully spend the afternoon putting everything together and sending it all in.  Two days later I get one of those little form-postcards that informed me the search was over, the candidate was selected, and thanks for applying.  This postcard must have been sent before the request to send more docs and complete a full app.  What a crock!  I have one last thing to say to those people - karma's a b*tch.

Did you follow up with a wtf to the search committee member who requested the materials? I can see this happening if HR put you on the wrong list, was still sending out rejection cards for the previous year's search, etc.

I didn't.  I also thought it happened on account of <interthreaduality> incompetent HR drones.  A letter to the SC would only have confirmed that, and there's nothing to be gained by picking a fight with HR drones.  Come to think of it, even if it was the SC's fault they probably would have blamed it on HR.

OP, I agree that the quick phone call could go either way.  I've had long phone calls that came to nothing, not even a timely rejection letter (six months and counting for one position), and quick phone calls that led to follow-up interviews.  You just can't know.  What's in your control is getting your materials together for the next opening and let this one proceed however it will.

I see nothing wrong with a three-question first-round interview. It goes something like this:

1. Why do you think that this position is a good fit for you?

2. Could you please tell us more about your research agenda?

3. As you know, the successful candidate will be responsible for teaching [the Gen Ed survey/the core methods course/grad students/whatever]. How would you approach that part of the job?

The answers to those questions (with follow-ups if/when needed) will provide plenty of information to determine whether or not I want to see a candidate on campus.

As far as the questions, those were right on.  I guess I should have known better when the SCC told me that they would call me between 11:30am and 12pm, and the SC chair gave me his cell # "In case the committee got to busy, so I could call and remind them."
