I just received the most bootleg looking application acknowledgment/AA/EO form from "Small State U."  The envelope has different colored address stickers, no official university stamp/address etc.  The letter itself is on faded xeroxed letterhead with holes punched in the top.  The return card might be the best part, with the name of the AA/EO director whited out and rewritten on the front side, and crossed out with a pen and rewritten on the back side.  Wow! If they can't afford letter head and new postcards with the appropriate name on them..what should I expect.

Waiting and waiting some more. . .so far I have sent out:

24 tenure track apps
2 post doc apps
1 VAP app
and I've seen 2 wikijections. . .

About half of the deadlines have just past.  I am seriously thinking of finding a cafe that has no internet access so I can stop checking my email and wiki sites every 15 minutes. But the thought of dragging all my dissertation notes and laptop somewhere else seems a bit daunting. Anyone else feeling this way??? I need to practice my patience, but I think Ive spent it all in the afternoons with my 2 year old.

Are you using a Mac?

Hang in there everybody. I was in your shoes last year and it was no fun.

That is awesome ann05. I was going to suggest berkeleygirl turn off airport (or whatever the pc version is) so at least there are more steps to getting online. I do this for 1/2 a day 3 or 4 times a week, mostly to avoid getting interrupted by spam or student emails while I am writing. It makes a world of difference, but is harder and harder as I am getting to a period of possible app feedback and impulsively check email and wiki every 10m. But this macfreedom thing is a much better option. Thanks!

I have sent out 8 TT faculty applications (a couple weeks ago), my field doesn't have a wiki, the official deadlines aren't technically until the end of the calendar year (though several places mentioned that they would begin reviewing before then - hence, I got mine in) and the waiting is already under my skin....luckily I have this dissertation thing to worry about (defense is scheduled in 1 month!) and occupy most of my thoughts- but I just want to know something..... if I'm out in the first round, please just tell me. I'm a big girl, I can take rejection - I just can't take not knowing.

The wiki for my field is not very active, either.

I have to say that working on the dissertation and trying to find a job at the same time sucks. I can't give either the attention it deserves.

My wikis were really active last year when I was "lurking." There are only 2 people updating mine this year.  If only there were that few people on the market...sigh

Today I submitted two more applications by real-mail. Go me!

Running total:
5 TT applications  (3 wikijections)

.....And two more going out this weekend electronically.
And now to move on to impending-major-conference papers! I mean, my dissertation.

I've been working away on my dissertation and upcoming conference paper, waiting to hear back from the first round of schools.  On a scheduled h-net peek, I found 3 more jobs to apply for. I am happy for the recent listings, and am lucky to have so many in my field this year, but am so tired of applying to schools,  especially since I have only heard back from 2 of over 20.  I have to apply right? Or..should I only apply to the ones that are incredible at this point?

I know exactly how you feel.  I've sent out close to 30 applications, but over the past week, my field has had a flurry of postings.  Yesterday, my dream school posted a job in my field.  Of course, I will apply this weekend.

Thanks for the positive thoughts, by the way.  The phone interview today went well, and I have another scheduled next week.  Keep your heads up, fellow ABDs, and let's be certain to post our milestones here.  That goes for job search AND successful defenses!
