Just discovered this forum-- what a great resource. Nice to know there are others out there fretting over some of the same issues I am.
I'm ABD and on the market, too, and have so far struck out on the handful of TT jobs for which I'm eligible. I've heard back in the negative from all but one, and am getting a bit worried. I did get an interview with one of the Societies of Fellows, which was exciting, but I figure even on the shortlist for that I'm a longshot, given the competition.
Ah well. At least I've got lots of leftover turkey to fuel the mad dash towards the next round of application deadlines.

If you are in one of those fields with only a handful of TT jobs every year, then all I can say is have a BACK-UP PLAN, have a BACK-UP BACK-UP PLAN, and don't forget the BACK-UP BACK-UP BACK-UP PLAN. Ah well. At least I've got lots of leftover turkey to fuel the mad dash towards the next round of application deadlines.
That's the spirit.

Berkeleygirl, thanks!
And polly_mer, I hear you on the backup plan. I definitely need plans B-Z for next year, given the state of my field right now.

Hi everyone, 6 apps out today and I am feeling a bit despondent - that all of the work is for naught and they will skip over me as an ABD. One job advertised ABDs ok and, polly, that is my backup plan!!! As well as a few fellowships, etc. One annoying thing, there was an online app which required that I paste the cover letter into a box with a character limit significantly under my 1.75 page letter, so I spent all morning winnowing it down. Only to discover that the box read spaces as characters and that I had to take it down 30% more. So now it is an almost 1 page letter, this after a week of refining it. yeesh. Of course this is one of my target positions. The letter is probably improved, as I tend to be wordy.

You don't know what will happen, so no need worrying at this stage. Use that energy to expand your backup plan. So many factors go into the decisions, so cast a wide net and hope for a fish...or a water bug, or....something. Best of luck!

What a process!
A quick survey of three people in my department now that are on the market.
1. Finished last year and has stayed on as a researcher (advisor didn't throw hu to the fire when hu submitted arguably early--read: no job in hand); recently flown out for an interview at an intl postdoc but likely didn't get it.
2. Slightly older student (a decade+ older than me) who is submitting this year; schools chomping at the bit to get at him and his sexy topic. Multiple conference interviews lined up.
3. Me? We'll see! Nothing on the interview horizon, and I have a string of wiki-jections to my name, but I am still rather chuffed to have been asked for more materials last week.
.....the search marches on! I sent in another app today and will let go of another tomorrow!

Beware of wikijections, they are sometimes wrong. I crossed a job off a month ago due to false information and now have an interview with them this week. Good Luck!

Advice Needed! I was contacted for a conference interview last week but opted for a phone interview. The SC emailed back immediately saying they would get back to me to schedule it. Then_______ Thanksgiving break _______Monday______Tuesday morning_______Nada. How long should I wait before contacting the SC? I want to let them know that I am free whenever they need me to be, but don't want to come off as an anxious annoying candidate.

I'd reply to his email and say you're looking forward to doing a phone interviews. Offer some convenient times, but also say you're flexible.

I heard from the SC and we are on for next week.
I just got an email from another school wanting additional materials sent by January. The strange thing is that I know some folks that have conference interviews for this job this week. Any idea why I wouldn't be invited to the preliminary interview? Puzzled . . .
