I'm teaching for the first time this semester.  I'm a Ph.D. student in rhetoric.

I find myself increasingly frustrated at the lack of interest of completing assignments even when completing them well will lead to good grades and increased competence in writing.  I also find myself tired of policing students who are disruptive, talk during exams after being instructed not to do so, and laugh at other students at inappopriate times, among other things.

These might seem like minor issues, but they make me question why I came back to school in the first place.  I have never bought into the myth that teaching is easy.  I find it more challenging than any other job I have ever had.

I know there are many posts online about these issues.  Given that, are there books anyone could recommend?  Or feel free to give advice.  I could use it.

Most threads about teaching and classroom management methods are in the In the Classroom forum.  Here are some that might help.

"Seeking recommendations of books on effective university teaching" thread

"Teaching comp" thread

Using the search term "classroom management" will generate about 15 pages of results in which the topic is discussed.  Here is an example, the "Controlling the Classroom" thread.
