I'm in a quite fortunate situation, and would love to hear your opinions about where I should go next.

I'm considering a PhD in social science at Oxbridge or a PhD in Business at a top European business school (INSEAD, LBS, IESE). Of course, there's always going back to the US for a degree.

I was educated in America for undergrad (economics and engineering) and am currently doing an Masters at (Oxbridge) on fellowship. I have dual EU/US citizenship and speak a few European languages. I have a business background and experience at top multinational companies.

So, here are my questions:

- What is it like to teach in Europe? How different is it between countries? What is the pay like, the lifestyle?
- What countries are best for PhDs? I speak English and Spanish and could probably improve my French and German to an acceptable level (but could probably not write a PhD thesis in either).
- I'm eager to live in Europe for the next few years but may want to go back to the US at some point. Will a European PhD be a big handicap in getting academic jobs? In getting other sorts of jobs?
- Do people with PhDs from Europe get other sorts of (non-teaching) jobs? What would be my options on leaving academia?
- What else do I need to know before deciding to do a European PhD versus an American one?

Some advice, never start a post by saying you are in a fortunate situation.  It brings out the worst in some people.

You need to figure out the search feature since these topics have been discussed pretty thoroughly in the past.  Of course, the search feature is not the easiest to figure out, but if you do, you will have good information on this topic.

If you are lucky, one of the search feature masters may come along, take pity, and post a set of links.  I am not a search function master so don't look at me.

I am sick and tired of following my dreams.  I think I'll just ask them where they are going and catch up with them later.  Mitch Hedberg

I did do a search, but didn't find anything -- can you find me some links?

You don't seem to have done very much investigation into this (if any). I would suggest making an appointment to see one of your lecturers and getting some basic advice from them.

I don't mind the OP being fortunate, but that above certainly brought out the worst in me.

You want to do a PhD at Oxbridge and you ask this kind of question?

I'm quite sure the answer is: yes -- yes I can.

"Business" is a vast, vast topic.

What kind of "business"?

In my field, there is quite a large difference in the research conducted in North America vs. what's done in Europe.

What is your field?

On the search page try checking the "search thread titles only" box. It produces nonsense unless you do. I don't know why it isn't the default.

A European PhD will usually not be an asset if you want to land a job in the U.S. after your finish.

If you have to ask, then you have other, more serious, problems.
