A couple of years ago I noticed that an ID proponent was speaking on campus (obviously not sponsored by our science department). When I commented on this to one of my colleagues, she said, "Oh, I dunno. I think it's important to keep an open mind."
Oh good lord. Long ago, a good friend of mine told me that he had realized that there was only one way to respond to a co-worker who bombarded him with is whacked-out theories and speculations on the paranormal, conspiracy theories, and space aliens: "I don't have an open mind on that subject." It's an idiotic platitude that you should always keep an open mind, but some things are just bunk. It is more likely that I will be a) struck by lightning, b) attacked by an escaped bonobo and c) marry into the royal house of Sweden under a blue moon than that I will become convinced of the "scientific" merits of ID. Sorry, my mind is closed. Please return during our regular business hours with an idea that isn't complete crap.

I might have told this story before, but I once had a colleague ask me for an explanation of the requirements one of his perky, blond, female advisees must meet in order to "...get her bachelorette degree." He seriously thought the word "bachelorette" was correct.
Is he this guy? http://chronicle.com/forums/index.php/topic,64014.0.htmlEwww...I hope not. Never knew this former colleague to be quite that bold, but, come to think of it....he was single and kind of a loner. Nah, couldn't be him. Could it? I'm single and kind of a loner, and I manage to keep my inappropriate remarks to a low level except to forum colleagues whom I will likely never meet in person.

Of all the people on the fora, you're undoubtedly among the ones that most others would like to meet someday! Just sayin'!

Of all the people on the fora, you're undoubtedly among the ones that most others would like to meet someday! Just sayin'! Why, thank you! I'm happy to know that, of course, but my point is that being single and being a loner don't excuse inappropriate behavior. I also know not to refer to a female's undergrad degree as a "bachelorette" degree, and can't think of a reason to invite a student to my living quarters after hours. I will try to find an East Coast meetup at some point when time permits, because I'd like to meet more forumites in real life, though. And when I do, I will certainly not describe them with diminutive terms such as Bachelorette or Doctorette or Professorette. Now, I would like to know whether the car named Corvette is in fact intended to resemble a female crow ( corvus). I should try to keep my mind from wandering, but I like the things it brings back from its travels.

So, I shouldn't be paying attention to those reruns of The Dating Game?
