Would you know if the student had also contacted the guest speaker--the criminal justice professor?

I think the student did contact the speaker and copied the instructor on the email as well, if I'm not misreading.  (I was surprised at the student's moxie, actually!)

Yes.  The initial email that spurred the worry was sent to both myself & the Dr. Guest, although I was more of a "cc" on it.  It was more addressed to him than to me, even though she did talk about it some.  That was some moxie, for sure!  I don't know if it will always serve her well (not everyone would have looked on the situation in any way positive).  I know I myself have gotten in trouble for being moxie-ish.

Thanks for the compliments, folks.  I tried, and an AWFUL lot of my ability to handle it was from eating picking your brains on the topic.  ;)

Now I just wish I could show this thread to the search committee at dream job.......

Thanks for appeasing my curiosity.  I wonder if Dr. Guest will ever agree to give a guest talk again.

You might not be able to show the thread, but you could certainly talk about the situation in an interview.  I think it would be very impressive.  We've probably all been in situations in which a guest speaker was unpredictable in a way that threw the class off track.

You want unpredictable and disturbing images. Try an STD lecture in the service sometime. I sat through one that was 90 minutes long, and these lectures were always right after lunch. There was a continual procession of slides of male and female genitalia and orifices distorted by the effects of STDs. You COULDN'T leave (remember, this was the service), but the reactions after the lecture involved a long line of officers outside the offices of the CO and the XO. When the annual lecture came up the next year, there were promises from the CO on down that there would be no pictures.

Given the nature of his work I'm guessing that Dr. Guest has thick skin and can deal. There are many worse things than being called racist by a random student.

OP, did Dr. Guest have a response?

Not really.  He wrote back to the Stu Dent defending himself, but I suspect she didn't believe him.  I sent him some suggestions after the discussion and he said thank you, but it seemed to me like he was kind of shell shocked.  I suspect he won't do this lecture in a non majors class again.
