My condolences. The passing of a loved one is always difficult; even if all other things are going well. I wish you all the best for the job search.

An actual Ph.D., on the other hand, will be a good credential to have.  You may want to think about completing that Ph.D. given the market.  Even for CCs.

Chime. It's one thing to be ABD while working on the degree, but the SC may look at the CV and wonder if the PhD will ever be finished. Consider the competition, especially in a tough year like this one.

Good luck!

Remember that the reason you were not hired may be that the committee was dominated by idiots (not necessarily in your case, but it happens.)

This was a CC position--it should have been an easy one to get.
Did you come across as prepared to teach course loads of five or more courses a quarter/semester? As willing to only teach 100- and 200-level courses or prepared to teach at a school with an open enrollment? Do you have experience teaching this population of students? Were you convincing about wanting to teach at a community college for the long-term? Did you come across like getting this position was a cinch because it was a CC position? These would be some questions to ask yourself when evaluating your interview. A CC is not a third-rate university; it is a CC which has its own needs. CC's hire people who match the criteria above. Also, it is hard to get a job in English without a PhD, even at a CC.

Thank you - I needed that today.
