Does anyone think it's odd to donate to an organization you might benefit from?  I have hesitated before donating to an organization that supports research in my field and from whom I apply for grants.  Not that they would know or care about the amounts I can give, but it seems a little less than altruistic.
I suspect that people in most organizations that are raising money don't really care about your reasons for giving, whether you feel altruistic about it or not. Money talks.

This thread has given me the impetus to write a check to my college's foundation this week.

Do you mean your undergraduate alma mater or the institution at which you are currently employed?  I've given to the latter, but not to the former yet, myself.  Or your graduate alma mater?

Unfortunately, I think conjugate gives good advice.

I have previously given to both my undergraduate alma mater, money and by volunteering as a mentor, and my graduate alma mater, specifically to the department in which I studied, but I meant the institution at which I am currently employed.

I donated to the foundation association of the college where I worked previously. I had an automatic deduction set up for that, but this is the first time I have given to my new school.

I am not a faculty member but I will dare to post here anyway.

At our school, there is a faculty-staff campaign fund that goes to a student scholarship so I am happy to donate to that.  At a previous school we were told that the percentage of faculty and staff contributing to the school was a number that the development office could use to brag to potential donors about overall committment to the school so it can help in fund raising which is a good thing.
