Hello,

I am looking for the tax professionals who could offer some good advice on my overseas fellowship. I live in a small town and it is hard to find ones. If you have any recommendations, please let me know? Do you know anything about H&R block?

Thank you.

I've worked with H&R Block before, though I don't any longer.  As a huge organization, they have experts about everything on their staff.  However, the experts on specialized subjects usually aren't in the small offices where the general public walks in with ordinary every day needs.  You'd probably have to be pretty assertive to speak directly with such an expert and would either have to drive to a large city or talk on the telephone.  The one time the person I was working with didn't know an answer, I had to wait several days while she contacted an expert and got back to me.  Check with the international student advisor or the coordinator of study abroad programs at your school. They probably know of someone.

Great advice. Thank you, michigander.  I will check with international office to see if they can recommend someone.

I almost think you're better of becoming a mini-expert yourself. Reading through the IRS publications on education and working abroad will give you most of the information you need. For the actual filing, the major tax software (TaxCut and Turbotax) are actually pretty good at walking you through fellowships and international issues.

Thank you, higherandhigher! I like your suggestions, and will look into the site you gave carefully. I also use Turbotax and I didn't know it has sections on fellowship and stuff.
