The ball of my foot has been sore and inflamed for probably two months now. It comes and goes, but over the last 4 or 5 days, it has really been super painful. It is worse, of course, on days when I have to stand for 3 hours to teach. I have arthritis, but am not sure if this is being caused by arthritis or something else. My arthritis has only been in my finger joints up to this point, so to see it now impacting my feet would be an ominous sign, indeed.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? Any solutions? I am thinking I might need a cortisone injection, but would like to avoid that if there is some other solution.

On the shoe thread, someone mentioned similar pain and said they had Morton's Neuroma. I had another friend who also had this with similar pains.

(Also, Google Health? Who knew that existed?)

Heels, I know well, from bouts with plantar fascitis and heel spurs.

I've worked through mine by eschewing high heels and returning to ballet class.

I haven't dealt with insteps as much.

Hope in any case you find relief, foot pain is no fun at all....

Check also you don't have some stress fracture on the ball or toe joint(s).  Hurts like heck, and only goes away if you can rest your feet.

I would start with the PF threads for advice on good shoes and such.

Good luck

Check out that Morton's neuroma link... sounds like this is what is going on.  Plantar fasciitis pain is more in the arch/heel area, and is worse when initially putting weight down (so in morning or after sitting for a while).  Bruises would cause pain initially and then (hopefully) go away - not come and go.  A stress fracture would cause you pain during and after weight bearing.  And a bunion just doesn't sound like what you are describing.

But of course, nothing in medicine is 100%.

I'm wondering if it could be related to the pregnancy - there's a lot of relaxin going through your body in the last few months of pregnancy - could it be some ligament loosening up and causing foot-flattening or something?  (Obviously, I know nothing about this and am totally guessing, but I had a lot of weird hip and other joint pain while I was pregnant because things loosen up.)

If you have RA like me, it is also possible that this is the arthritis. While finger joints are often the first to become symptomatic, , it turns out that foot problems are nearly as prevalent (according to my old rheumy). You might start with your rheumatologist, and/or try putting a bit of gentle heat on for short periods to see if it helps any.

Come back if this turns out to be long-term; I'll be happy to share my shoe journeys with you.
