I am trying to show my on-line studends some program listings and
would like to be able to annotate them by drawing circles and arrows
on the listings as I am discussing this (similar to what I would be
able to do with powerpoint). For instance this is useful when showing
the mapping of arguments to parameters in a function call.

Unfortunately powerpoint can't fit much code per page, and it would be
rather cumbersome to chop up code to make it fit.

Is there a way to show and draw on program listings?

Elluminate Live (which is what we use) has its own whiteboard and
drawing tools, but only lets me import pptx and various simple image
file formats. It also allows application sharing, but the only
application I know capable of this type of drawing is powerpoint
which is not suitable for the above reasons.

So either I need to get program listings easily into Elluminate, or
find some application that lets me use the mouse to draw on listings.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I think you want Jing. Haven't used it myself, but my understanding is that you can capture anything that you have on your screen to make little video (plus audio) clips.

I will check it out .. but I am really looking for something that I could use "live" while I am explaining something to a student on-line rather than (re-)playing a recording. In class I can use a smartboard and circle various items, or distribute handouts with annotations. (I suppose I could scan these too and then upload it, but that would be too labor intensive, hence my question).

thanks.

You could try copying your code into OneNote and using Application Sharing. OneNote might come with your MS Office package, but if not, it's pretty inexpensive as a standalone. Alternatively, you might even be able to do it using Word and Application Sharing.

How many students do you need to be able to show at once?

I use Adobe ConnectNow.  It's free for up to two students.  You can share your entire screen, or just one particular piece of software.
