Valparaiso University

I'm wondering if someone can comment on Valparaiso's status as a religious school (in terms of expectations for faculty, particularly). I took a look at some earlier threads that didn't really address this. I see that it's a Lutheran school, but not affiliated with any particular synod. Further details would be most welcome.

I have no useful information to offer vis-a-vis Lutherans, but I never miss an opportunity to mention that in the 1920s Valparaiso was almost sold to the Ku Klux Klan. They don't hide that, though, to their credit:

I have a close friend who went there. She's catholic. I never got the impression that Valpo was very strictly Lutheran/down your throat with it (but I didn't actually go there).

Your environment sounds vaguely toxic. Or maybe just characteristically British.

Valpo is pretty liberal and easy-going as far as religion is concerned.

I believe it's ECLA (though I could be wrong!). It's part of a Lilly Foundations group dealing with church-related schools, so it does take its religious affiliation seriously. Valpo is a totally cool town--great old houses, close enough to Chicago that there is a South Shore train station there (well, okay, it's kind of the end of the line, but still, you can get downtown easily even if it takes a while). It has a pretty good reputation, though from what I can tell it's expanded relatively rapidly in the last few years with lots of revenue-generating programs. But there aren't many LACs that haven't done that.
I'd go there in a heartbeat. Apply!

Thanks, everybody, for your replies. All of this confirms the feeling I had about the place...but it's good to have it confirmed!
