If you're at the NMM, renting in Greenwich makes much more sense.

Especially with the kid.  Greewich is very peaceful.  However, this might be inconvenient for your spouse. - DvF

If they rent in North Greenwich, up nearer the Dome, then the Jubilee line from North Greenwich to Westminster is only 15 minutes.

Greenwich versus Walworth is a bit of a no-brainer ;-)

This is where I live!  It is a nice area and it is very easy to get into central London from here.  My youngest Capricielette just walked to the Maritime Museum with her school today. She said it was fun!

If you decide to go really cheap, you can always stay here (assuming you're not a serial killer or something.) We have a three bedroom flat and three kids. (Inluding a 13 year old potential babysitter) Or I can check out potential areas for you.

Try Doctor in the House, a bed and breakfast service for academics visiting London or Edinburgh.

The St. Paul's Hostel, right near three different Tube lines, and several buses, can be booked by the room. And you're a bit off-season so you could probably have your choice at the moment.

It's the former choirboy school, right near the Cathedral, and the staff is very reliable (last summer, when I needed a place to which to forward something valuable while traveling, they were the place I thought of first, and they came through just fine.)

I stay there whenever in London; it's easy enough to reach KC/St.P. for the BL and almost everything else--the Exchange is within walking distance (well, I walk a lot, but it's not far) also.

The rooms have 2-3-4 beds--some very interestingly layered, like trundles but sort of modern-stacked--if your child is old enough, they might enjoy one of those.

You don't have to be a member of the IYH group, although rates are discounted for those who are, and they serve a very reasonable breakfast (cafeteria-style, with many choices: youguhrts, fruits, stewed tomatoes, eggs, toast, bacon/sausage etc.etc.etc. for not very much additional in the AM as well.)

Transport for London's Oyster cards are the best deal - good on the Tube, the buses, and the Docklands Light Railway (esp convenient for the NMM and if you're staying in Greenwich).

Because, you know, that stuff on the syllabus is like, in writing, and there are so many ways you can, like, read that, but when the guys who sit by you in class, like, you know, must know what's really going on, right? -- AmLitHist, channelling student

There are some great places near Victoria Station. I stayed a couple of times at the Cherry ? (it used to be in Rick Steves London book). You could eat reasonably around there too; I had some great meals at Jenny Lo's House of Noodles. This was about 9 years ago, though--
