Hello
I work at a university where several of us are in multi-year contracts in  Non Tenure Track positions. We teach more than TT, but fully participate in meetings and contribute service. I've been put on a committee for tenure and promotion. I am wondering how Non TT faculty at other universities ever get promoted? Do they? What titles are they given? What criteria exists for promotion?  Otherwise, it seems like we'll have the same teaching load, and same salary, forever. I'd love any feedback. Thanks

At my grad institution the non-TT teaching people are given the title of Lecturer.  After some amount of time (I don't know how long) and I'm sure other factors, they can be promoted to Senior Lecturer.  There may also be a University Lecturer position, but I'm not 100% sure.

At my former institution (where I was a non-TT continuing lecturer), one could be promoted to a non-TT Assistant Professor and then to Associate. There were nice increases in pay, but none at all in load or expectation, since the entire intent of the non-TT positions was to prioritize teaching and service.

At my uni, you start out as an Instructor. After six years, one can apply for Lecturer. Another six years go by, and one can apply for Senior Lecturer. Each promotion comes with an automatic raise. While this isn't considered tenure, the Lecturer and Senior Lecturer get 12 months advance notification if the position is scheduled for elimination.

In regards to requirements, demonstrated teaching excellence, involvement in faculty development and pedagogy, etc. are included in the dossier. Research and service are not required but will be looked upon favorably when the dossier is reviewed.
