This is exactly what I have in mind, with an optional Yankee Swap thrown in just in case it gets boring. What is a Yankee Swap? Is it like Dirty Santa?

Yup. http://www.secretsanta.com/action/page?pageId=118I usually do a version AFTER Christmas, where friends wrap and re-gift the hideous things they've received. It's a big hit!

Dirty Santa is exactly like the Secret Santa prof smartypants describes, except it may include some slightly risque gifts along with the keepers and the regifted dud items.

On account of not everyone is an American, so maybe you shouldn't assume so.
The rest of the world is funny that way.
I don't get it. Dirty Santa is exactly like the Secret Santa prof smartypants describes, except it may include some slightly risque gifts along with the keepers and the regifted dud items.
Thanks for the clarification. I love Dirty Santa, but I still hate the holidays, especially Thanksgiving, because it's soonest and lamest.

I am at that last minute holiday tipping conundrum. I know mail carriers can't accept money gifts, and I luckily don't have an army of people to tip-doormen, massage therapists, dog walkers, nannies, etc. This is something I should be more comfortable with-but do you tip the person who cuts your hair? Do you give the cost of one visit? It is common in my area for a woman to pay 220.00 for a hair coloring appointment. If a regular haircut is over 50.00, do you tip the person 50.00 at the holidays? I wish I still had my nice long hair that didn't require a hairdresser except for the occasional trim, but now I do have a "regular" haircut appointment. WDYD?

USPostal Service mail carriers can't accept monetary gifts: from the CNN money site:
USPS Mail carrier: Non-cash gifts with value up to $20. This is for mail carriers that you know and see regularly.
Maybe some do accept money, but not supposed to.
The person who cuts my hair charges 50.00 plus tip, so I guess 50.00 would be fine. I think I have not tipped this much in the past. Maybe since I always tip 20%, they will not think less of me.

I just left a card and a box of chocolates out for my friendly neighbourhood mailman. I hope they don't get nicked.

I'm glad to hear about people leaving gifts for their mail carriers. My dad had a walking route--12 miles every day, rain, snow, sleet, etc.--and, although his mailbag was heavier at the end of the route for several days leading up to Christmas, he really appreciated the small thank-you gifts people gave him. He'd get cookies and cards and gift certificates, gloves, socks, and all sorts of odds and ends from the businesses on his route. Every couple of years or so, we'd end up with about 15 of those small rectangular fruitcakes, though. Talk about weighing down the mailbag! Worse than Sears catalogs!

A friend of mine netted almost 1,000 dollars in tips as a mail carrier in one year. I think it may be technically not allowed but something that goes on regardless.
Gift certificates are a good substitute for cash if there is a fear of being unlawful. They now make Visa cash cards, which could be a way to work around the "no cash" rule.
