Since the fall/winter holidays are upon us, it must be time to share this year's holiday issues-including MIL darkening doorstep, bad casseroles that should not exist, going solo for the first time, religious conundrums, children as party wrecking balls, Dean coming over, etc.

My parents are coming for a week at Thanksgiving. I'm thrilled, as I get a ong well with them and rarely see family out here in the middle of nowhere. There is only minor, standard MIL tension between my SO and my Mom.
My biggest problem is what the heck to do while they are in town. My town has a few neat tourist attractions, but they are all closed for the season. We can do a small road trip, depending on the weather, but even then I am having trouble finding something worthwhile to do within a 2-3 hour radius.

It is possible I meet (maybe) future in-laws for Thanksgiving. Labkid #1 and boyfriend are planning a trip to Tiffany's to look at rings.
I think home team advantage might be wise, even if it means cooking nearly single-handedly (OK, the Labspouse does the turkey, but I do just about everything else).

I'm stayin' home, and spouse is stayin' home, and we're not goin' anywhere, and ain't nobody comin' to see us, and that's that. (digs heels into ground, leans back with thumbs in beltloops)
Actually, this is the time of year I begin to contemplate a Cthulhu door wreath, dancing naked in blue paint in front of the house, and other things to bewilder our neighbors.

I was thinking of the Jewish holidays(a little late maybe) in the fall as well as the upcoming Thanksgiving, etc.
I am also in the position of having to make travel arrangements for Thanksgiving relatives early so I was thinking of all of that. Also, never to soon to do just what bibliothecula mentions and let inquring relatives know that this year WILL be different.
I am struggling with an elderly person issue that is making me feel like Scrooge. Person lives far away-is quite ill and old- and always says she can't wait to come. If you call her, she is all set to come. This always involves someone having to go get her(2 hours each) way, drive her to my house (4 more hours each way), and I need to find a room for her that has easy access to bathroom, etc. This is for a holiday where 20+ other people come from out of state. So, you see why I have to think early. There is often a medical concern. Last year, it involved an ambulance. Am I too mean to just not call her this year-send a nice card, offer to visit and take her out to dinner? She always wants to come...

Because Thanksgiving is only 11 days away? We're spending it with my MIL. I may be spending it sobbing in a closet.

Because Thanksgiving is only 11 days away? OK, call me a snowflake - are we talking Canadian Thanksgiving? collegekidsmom , I'm sure your elderly guest wants to come and be part of the crowd, but it does seem like a difficult situation. Maybe it's just me, but I don't see any reason not to send her something nice and then go up to see her at another point when it's not so hectic. The other thing I might recommend is if she will be by herself, maybe you could send her one of those prepared hams and a cake as sold in those seasonal catalogs. I use them every year for people at a distance and especially for an elderly aunt who can physically enjoy the food, but won't cook all that stuff for herself. She tells me she looks forward to her surprise box each year, so I guess she likes it. On the other hand, I can see this person sitting alone with a beautiful baked ham and crying that she's by herself, so there's that...

collegekidsmom, I think you have to invite her. She is probably the person to whom your invitation makes the most difference, among the 20+ you're hosting. I have an elderly relative like this; although she tries not to let on, having someone to spend holidays with is a lifesaver for her. I'd brainstorm some ways to cut back on other things to make it easier for yourself.

It wasn't specified, so why would we assume one over the other? 'Cause I'm an American and I assume American stuff first, not Canadian. I'm funny that way.

Agreed. Any way to get someone to bring her? Even inviting 1 extra person who acts as chaffeur for the person might be worth it in the long run.
